What happens

Serena Turner has a secret kept for a thousand years. She sent a puppet to take on all the cruelty her reborn lover Nigel Dalton could inflict. As long as the puppet endures, he never has to know the truth about who she is. But puppets break. When Nigel discovers what she's done, Serena is already elsewhere, deep in conversation with Simon Clark, a man who seems to understand her in ways that run across centuries. The two of them circle each other while Nigel circles both. After trials that test whether any of them will survive, Serena thinks she can start fresh. Then Simon reveals he's been loving her across lifetimes.
